Sponsors back Convicts’ Bingham bid

The Sydney Convicts’ bid to host the 2012 Bingham Cup is gathering steam, with a number of companies clamouring to sign up as potential official sponsors, should the gay rugby event be hosted here.

Online betting giant Sportsbet has joined IBM, aussieBum and Harbour 02 as a company committed to sponsoring the 2012 Bingham Cup in Sydney. Sportsbet is a subsidiary of Irish bookmaker Paddy Power, which sponsored the 2008 Bingham Cup in Dublin.

Convicts president Andrew ‘Fuzz’ Purchas reported that the club had not been actively seeking sponsorship support — rather, that sponsors have approached the club of their own accord.

“Each additional sponsorship dollar we receive makes the trip to Sydney more affordable for every player,” he said.

The list of high-profile sponsors coming on board at this early stage, before a sponsorship program has even been initiated, puts the Convicts in a very strong position, not only to win their bid, but to then stage a successful, financially viable cup.
