Convicts close to the finals

The Convicts won their first semi-final in the Walker Cup on Saturday, defeating the Roseville-based team Brothers 17-10.

It was a hard-fought game, with guts and determination from both sides. The Convicts had met Brothers twice during the season with one win and one loss, so they knew the semi would be close.

“The Convicts are excited to be representing Woollahra Colleagues in the Walker Cup and we are really happy to have won our first semi-final,” Convicts president Dave Whittaker said.

“We have shown we know how to play finals in the four Bingham Cups we have competed in over the last eight years, so for many of the Convicts this is familiar territory.”

This Saturday August 6, the Convicts meet Merrylands in the Walker Cup ‘final’ at 12.25pm at Norford Park, Sefton. They are calling on supporters to come cheers the team on, as the winner of Saturday’s game will meet St George in the Walker Cup Grand Final on August 13.

“We will be looking to take our improving form into the Merrylands match with a win for a place in the Walker Cup Grand Final,” said Whittaker.

“It would be brilliant to add some more silverware to the cabinet, which already has two Bingham Cups, a Bingham Plate, a Bingham Bowl, and two Halligan Cups.”

The Convicts will take two teams to Manchester in June 2012 to play in the Gay Rugby World Cup, the Bingham Cup, against more than 30 international teams.

The Convicts have won the Bingham Cup twice, in New York in 2006 and in Dublin in 2008 and were finalists in 2010 in Minneapolis. The club has also won the Bingham Plate and Bingham Bowl, making it the most successful club in Bingham Cup history.
