Outgames offers helping hand

New travel scholarships for those struggling to make it to the Wellington Outgames in 2011 are now on offer.

Outgames organisers have announced the new scholarships are specifically for people from Pacific Island nations to attend the human rights conference — running alongside the sporting event — in March.

Outgames conference convenor Barry Taylor said generous funding from the Netherlands means a small number of travel and registration scholarships are available to attend the conference.

“We already were offering a small number of scholarships for conference registration, but many people from the Pacific were unable to attend unless they could fund funding to cover travel and accommodation,” Taylor said.

“This funding from the Netherlands government means that not only can we ensure there will be good representation from the Pacific region at the conference but we can offer more registration scholarships.

The new scholarships cover return airfares to Wellington, accommodation, meals and conference registration.

Those applying must be Pacific Islanders, actively involved in GLBTI human rights or community development and have the support of a GLBTI or human rights organisation.

A second round of Outgames registration scholarships — without funding for travel — are also now available to attend the conference. The scholarships are available to people across the Asia Pacific region, particularly young people and those working with grassroots organisations.

Application forms can be downloaded from the Wellington Outgames website and must be submitted by December 31.
