Step into spring with salsa

Heat up your spring with the latest same-sex salsa course, kicking off in Newtown this Wednesday, October 12.

Every Wednesday for six weeks upstairs at the Newtown Library on Brown St, instructor Penny Gulliver is offering dual classes that will

cater for both beginners and more advanced dancers.

Beginners can participate in Salsa 1 from 7-8pm. The class gives a basic introduction to street Latin dance with a tasty sprinkling of merengue, bachata and kizomba. The salsa style is a mixture of Los Angeles, Cuban and Colombian styles.

More adventurous dancers can take part in Salsa 2 and beginners rueda classes from 8-9pm. Rueda is a round-dancing form of salsa in which pairs of dancers form a circle, with dance moves called out by one person, a caller.

Prospective dancers can bring along a partner or come alone and be paired up. The classes are ideal for same-sex and mixed-sex couples and singles. The cost is $78 for the full six-week course, and if you bring three friends you’ll dance for free.
