Melbourne’s gay swimming team, the Glamourhead Sharks, raised almost $10,000 for people living with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) last month.
The Glamourheads swam with the MS 24-Hour Mega Swim from February 22-23 at the Fitzroy Swimming pool.
Swimmers kicked off at 6pm on Friday evening in teams of three and ploughed through the grueling 24-hour stint.
The Glamourheads crew covered almost 81km between its 15 members and raised $9,500.
“We had so much fun and my personal highlight of the swim was wearing a giant inflatable wig into the pool. It was super fun and made the start of the graveyard shift a little more interesting!” Glamourheads team member Shaun Polidano said.
“Not only did we swim hard and raise an outstanding amount of money for charity, we had an awesome time as a team and had many laughs along the way,” Glamourheads coach Jack Dow said.
The whole event raised more than $250,000 for MS Australia.
The following day, eight Glamourhead swimmers competed in the 2013 Victorian Long Course Championships at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatics Centre.
Organisers said all swimmers involved achieved personal bests on the day.
Kirk Goodsell, who has only been with the Glamourheads for a year, won his 200m butterfly heat by 13 seconds – just two seconds away from beating the national record set in 1988.
Newcomer Fernando Estrada took out second place in his heat despite only taking up swimming in the past three months.
