UK Opposition joins call for marriage

Labour Party leader Ed Miliband has called on the British Government to act on same-sex marriage before the end of 2011.

Miliband made the comments on the tenth anniversary of the equalising of age of consent laws in the UK and five years after the introduction of civil unions for same-sex couples.

“Five years on from the first civil partnership it is right that we look at extending marriage equality for those people who want it,” said Miliband, “I hope that we can make progress on this during the year ahead.”

As recently as July last year Miliband had maintained that there was not yet enough public support for same-sex marriage.

In December, Britain’s Daily Telegraph newspaper reported that government ministers were discussing opening up marriage and civil unions to all couples.

The British Prime Minister and Conservative Party leader, David Cameron has said he personally doesn’t have a problem with same-sex marriage, while coalition partners the Liberal Democrats are avid supporters.

  1. It’s time for Julia Gillard and Tony Abbott to follow the lead of their UK counterparts and “come out” in support of legalising same-sex marriage. They have run out of excuses. It’s time.
