Queer without fear

Queer without fear

Most LGBT relationships are built on love and respect. Some are built on abuse and control; this is domestic violence.

Domestic violence can take many forms including physical violence, sexual assault, verbal or emotional abuse and social, spiritual or financial control.

It can happen in all types of relationships, not only with intimate partners, it can also happen with other family members, this is called family violence. Family and domestic violence happens across all communities, social classes, ages, cultural backgrounds and geographical areas.

There is limited Australian research around family and domestic violence in the LGBT community, but studies suggest that the general patterns in the LGBT community are about the same as the broader community and that once violence starts it is likely to get worse.

If you think that you or someone you know may be experiencing abuse, get a copy of the booklet or safety card, called “Queer Without Fear”. These are available from Healthy Communities (07) 3017 1777.
