Decisions and other unknowns

Decisions and other unknowns

Is the universe speaking to me? Last night, I watched an old episode of Sex and the City. Charlotte is asking a question about finding true love again to the host of a love affirmations coach. Then she blames her current situation on Trey, saying he took her ability to love away from her.

Charlotte is wearing her victim dress perfectly. She’s choosing to be emotionally stripped and left bare. She could choose to get back out there like her coach suggests. But because we, the audience, love Charlotte, we tend to side with her. Uh uh. Not me. She needs to man up and stop blaming.

This morning I’m drinking coffee reading the horoscopes. Change, love, choices, consequences, roads leading to Rome … you know where I’m heading, right?

I slip in through the lobby at work, sneak behind someone opening a door, and dart for my cubicle, nearly tripping over a box and colliding head first into the desk.

It’s unusually late for me arriving today. I peek at some emails and stumble over a subscribed email. It’s about change, choices, consequences, roads leading to …

Change is ever constant. From friends changing their minds, lovers coming and going, children growing, parents health, bigger jeans, bosses changing guard … the list is endless.

It’s how we cope, how we continue to breath in each of these circumstances – especially lying down to put your jeans on – that makes the men stand out from the boys.

We aren’t required to acquiesce each event, but choosing to succumb to the victim or blame each time is and will be our downfall. It’s mental health 101, but maybe a good reminder for us all, that it’s not what happens to us, but how we choose to cope with it that counts.

Don’t worry, I’m not about to burst into song – yet. Though I will always be a man who looks at the purple post-it note on my desk preferring the appeal of the Equus penna versus flogging a Mortus equus.

That’s how I’ve got to today.
