It’s in the blood

It’s in the blood

The boys and I get absolutely addicted to a movie at a time and wear all the jokes and songs thin.  First it was Chicken Little, then Toy Story and now Madagascar.

Madagascar has to be the funniest kids movie out, not to mention with the most innuendo this side of the Stonewall bar. The chimps, Mason and Phil, are classic old English -˜fellows’ who -˜look after’ each other. King Julien and his second-in-charge Maurice camp it up at every chance they get. At one point Julien pops out of a cake wearing a grass skirt and coconut cups over his chest and exclaims, Look at me, I’m a lady, I’m a lady. We all love that bit.  My absolute favourites are the evil penguins, especially their lead Skipper.

I woke up the other Saturday morning on a mattress on the floor in the boys’ room at their house.  I had sensed him watching me.  Within an instant of me moving my head to judge how far he was, Chicky flung himself on top of me for morning cuddles.

He started singing, though I couldn’t instantly recognise it..  … start spreadin’ the newwws, I’m weaving todaaaaay.  I want to be a part of it, New Ork New Ork!…

Where on earth did you learn that one, my little Frankie? I asked him.  Head first in my armpit and legs twisted over my arms, he yelled out, It’s from Madagascar, Dad, Alex sings it.

Oh right, how did I miss that?  I’ve only seen it four thousand times this week.  I must have blanked out at the time.

All the chatter and song awakened the big man himself. Beau lifted his head from his pillow with a massive grin from ear to ear at the sight of me in his room on the floor, leapt off the end of his bed, wrestled with both Chicky and I and joined in the song  It’s up to youuu, New Ork, New Yooooorrrrrkk..

What a start to the morning! I strolled downstairs after dislodging the stowaway children from my arms and legs and sat down at the kitchen table with their mother.

We have been busy planning the birthday bash, now less than two weeks away and she told me even though it started off as a superhero party, Beau now wants everything Madagascar.

Too late, I’ve already spent a small fortune on it, besides, I have a really cool outfit on hire.

It reminds me of my little sister and me.  We watched Big Business every second day (well, it felt that often) after school. We could quote every line, My God, it’s me with the bad haircut and twenty years on we still laugh it up every time we get together.

It’s such a wonderful bond to have with someone, a shared movie so you can quote all the lines to each other.

My sister also does a great Goldie Hawn from First Wives Club, however, since she is in the UAE it’s a little hard to see her lips curl up and splash wine around over the phone when she does it.
It’s in the blood for my little men, there is no escaping it.

  1. Oh I know. And does anyone think its a terrible shame that Kate Hudsen inherited everything from Goldie except Goldies incredible talent? I mean come on Kate. What was Bride Wars all about?

  2. Yes.. my family members (sister) and I share a Goldie moment as well… its from the movie Death Becomes Her when when they are walking out of the funeral complaining about how the spray can is left in the car and who has the smallest purse.

  3. hehehe… That’s a great story! My brother Cam and I also share a Goldie Hawn funny moment in the movie Housesitter… when Goldies ‘on loan’ homeless mum is sprung by Steve Martin scavenging through the outside bin! “Oh My God” hahahaha! Love your work John! x
