Vale David

Vale David

As tears stain my keyboard, I try to get my head around the loss our community experienced at the weekend, with the sudden passing of DJ David (Hilda) Hiscock.

I woke like most ANZAC Days, dragging my sorry ass out of bed, dreading the thought of showering and putting a face full of make-up on and calling Two-Up all day. Knowing it would be fabulous once it started, I pushed on.

It wasn’t till I had showered that I realised my message bank was full of missed calls and messages. Reading one, then two, I slumped on the lounge in disbelief. This had to be a terrible mistake.

I’d talked to David not days prior. Hold on gorgeous, have a look at this, he’d chuckled. His fingers skimmed across his iPhone, showing me a picture of a cute boy he’d taken or found online.

I knew David for many years, working with him at the Newtown Hotel. When it closed I was over the moon when he made his nest at the Midnight Shift. Doing every Saturday night and Sunday with him, he was always happy to open his sanctuary, I don’t want to talk to anyone tonight. Can I just stay here and chat to you David? I’d say. Sure, hun, he’d chuckle.

Like a young boy with his first dirty magazine, he would show me the brand new videos he had edited, or some remix he’d found, eyes beaming through his glasses. I think the last one he showed me was the dance version of Charlene’s Never Been To Me, I squealed in delight, FAAAABBBBBULOUS, isn’t it, he would chuckle.

Not only have we lost a dear friend, Sydney’s club scene has lost a master. David was unique in his music style, bringing us some of the rarest retro video clips on a Sunday night, making punters forget about work on Monday. Mr Hiscock, you are irreplaceable!

David was the third wheel on our tricycle on Sunday nights at the Midnight Shift. Verushka and I are going to find it very hard not seeing his head pop up over the glass as we jump around like fools each week.

We both want to leave you all with this: DJ David Hiscock, you will be missed by us all, may the music never stop.

Thank you for the music, the songs I’m singing
Thanks for all the joy they’re bringing.
