A singer of sophistication

A singer of sophistication

There is more than meets the eye when embracing entertainer Ophelia of The Spirits. She isn’t just any new performer hoping to break out.

With the goal of performing internationally, she hopes to develop her music into a theatrical context but there’s something you should know about Ophelia of The Spirits. She doesn’t sing any old song. Instead she writes self-contained stories with parallels in the traditions of the Celts, the Indians and the Middle East.

Her tales tap into the subconscious and delve into the cyclical nature of life and the struggle to find beauty in a world full of darkness.

Often I feel as if I am a vessel or a channel for something which the unive-rse is expressing through me, Ophelia of The Spirits told Sydney Star Observer.

It’s like being a conduit -” the times when I have written great songs are the times when I have dreamed them and woken up with a tune in my head that won’t go away, or when I have sat down at the piano because I am feeling an emotion which I feel simply has to be expressed with a song.

I think as a society we have been taught to trust our conscious mind (or our intellect) at the expense of understanding the power of the subconscious. To the naked eye my lyrics can seem fairly direct but when you delve deeper almost every line has multiple layers of meaning.

Sometimes the most potent horror of the world can be hidden in the most seemingly innocent of places. One of the joys of having these layers of meaning is that it allows people to become sleuths in a way. They can take it all at face value or they can begin to search, to seek for more layers of meaning, for a deeper understanding. I have always wanted to find other seekers and allow them to find me.

Ophelia has been busy travelling throughout the past months with an invitation to play at the Art Gallery of NSW -˜ Sound Like Art’ event and performed a song and background music her V-Day at NIDA.

After working with Icelandic producer and arranger Geir Brillian, her self-titled EP has hit the streets. She hopes everyone who hears each song will take their own meaning from it.

Songs are a way of reflecting our own lives and sometimes they allow us to see our own situation or feelings in a new light. In a way the writer’s intention doesn’t matter once the song is out in the world and that’s one of the great things about music, she said.

Recording the vocals was definitely a challenge, inhabiting the character of Ophelia by myself in a small padded cell (otherwise known as the vocal booth) was both a blessing and a curse.

Happily, because no-one could see me, I could look as crazy as I wanted so I really went for it emotionally, especially with the song House of Cards -” I was practically bouncing off those foam walls.
