Mel Gibson’s gay brother speaks out

It has been revealed that Mel Gibson has an adopted gay brother.

Andrew Gibson, who vehemently defends his famous sibling, said in an interview at the weekend that he refuses to believe alleged taped conversations between Mel and ex-wife Oksana Grigorieva, in which the actor uses homophobic and racist language, are actually him.

“When I heard them I just thought, ‘That isn’t Mel’. He has never said anything abusive, aggressive or racist in his life,” Andrew Gibson told The Sunday Times yesterday.

He admitted his brother had made homophobic remarks during a 1991 interview, in which the actor said he didn’t want to “take it up the arse”.

“With this look, who’s going to think I’m gay? I don’t lend myself to that type of confusion,” Mel said in the interview.

“Do I look like a homosexual? Do I talk like them? Do I move like them?”

Andrew Gibson said his brother’s comments were not meant to cause any offence and that when he came out to Mel more than 20 years, he had been supportive.

“I have never once heard anything anti-gay come out of his mouth,” he said.

“[When I came out] he just said, ‘It’s not my choice, but I love you and you’re my brother’.”

The 43-year-old, who now lives in Redfern, said he distanced himself from the family after coming out and that they didn’t like his choice of boyfriends.

“They wanted me to go out with a Country Road queen and I like strong, dangerous men.”

Last year, actress Winona Rider told US GQ Magazine that she’d heard Mel tell homophobic and anti-Semitic jokes, including referring to her as an “oven dodger” when she revealed she was Jewish.
