Gay rights essential to join

The European Parliament has adopted resolutions calling on Turkey and Montenegro to lift their game on GLBT rights if they want to join the European Union.

The resolution on Turkey calls on the EU’s first majority Muslim candidate country to “ensure that equality, regardless of sex … or sexual orientation, is guaranteed by the law and effectively enforced”.

The resolution singled out the Turkish armed forces classification of homosexuality as a disease, the murder of transgender people, and the dropping of sexual orientation from a draft anti-discrimination code.

While EU MPs congratulated Montenegro on passing laws which prevented discrimination against GLBTs in employment and public services, they noted that “discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation and gender identity widely persists, including on the part of state authorities”.

Discrimination against the disabled and ethnic minorities were also of concern.
