Trans death remembered

A Melbourne protest against Aboriginal deaths in custody will mark the third anniversary of the death of transgender woman Veronica Baxter.

The May 12 rally has been organised by the Indigenous Social Justice Assocation (ISJA) – Melbourne and will also remember the death of Aboriginal man David Gundy who was shot by NSW police 23 years ago.

Transgender advocates will speak at the rally on the corner of Bourke and Elizabeth Sts from 11am.

Baxter was found hanging at the Silverwater male prison in New South Wales on March 16 2009, just six days after being arrested for supplying a prohibited drug.

At the 2011 coronial inquest, the coroner ruled that no third party had been involved and that the corrective services officers were not at fault.

The ISJA – Melbourne has called 2012 the year of action and are urging people “who want to stop the carnage” to join the campaign.
