Rainbow flag flies over Sydney

The rainbow flag was today raised over the Sydney Town Hall and will fly above the building throughout Mardi Gras to mark the City of Sydney’s support for its many LGBT residents, workers and visitors.

“The rainbow flag is a symbol of equality, respect and inclusion and shows that Sydney is gay-friendly and gay-safe,” Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore said.

“I am proud that the City’s most important civic building is flying the colours of red, yellow, orange, green, blue and violet to show our unwavering support for the LGBT community. The City also supports Mardi Gras and, as usual, will be taking part in the annual parade down Oxford and Flinders streets to Moore Park with a float dedicated to marriage equality.”

“At last year’s Mardi Gras we celebrated the passing in the NSW Parliament of the Same Sex Adoption Bill, which was a significant win for the LGBT community. I hope one day soon we will be celebrating marriage equality for all people, regardless of their sexuality.”

The City of Sydney is a major sponsor of the 2012 Sydney Mardi Gras Parade and has entered a float since 2005.

The rainbow flag will fly above Town Hall until Sunday 4 March – the day after the parade.
