Tom Dolan’s witty, heartfelt memoir is a fascinating insight into the life of a man whose struggles to accept his own sexual identity have profoundly affected his life. Dolan has described Cherry Cheeks as a “catalogue of mistakes — maybe through reading about my mistakes you will help forgive yours”. He’s being tough on himself, but there is much to learn here: Dolan’s earlier life as a married bisexual man forced to choose between his ‘mainstream’ heterosexual life of a wife and kids and pursuing his gay identity is thankfully more rare nowadays, but serves as a reminder of the problems we create for ourselves — and the hurt we can cause — when not being true to ourselves. There is a happy ending to this story, though, as Dolan now lives in Hawaii with his partner of 18 years.
