VIDEO: Sydneysiders’ reaction to the giant condom

ON Friday, Sydneysiders heading to work in the CBD in the morning were greeted with a giant, hot pink condom covered over the obelisk monument in Hyde Park.

Organised by LGBTI health promotion body ACON, the “giant condom” will remain there until Wednesday as part of a campaign to raise awareness on safe sex and HIV prevention among men who have sex with men.

The unveiling of the condom has attracted headlines around the country and became a social media sensation, with users using the #giantcondom hashtag to accompany their posts.

On Saturday, the Star Observer visited Hyde Park to ask what passersby thought of the giant condom. These are some of what they had to say:

  1. Hmm. Sky News UK covered this yesterday and the lion’s share of respondents said it was GREAT and was fantastic to raise awareness. The one idiot Brit (bloody tourist) that was interviewed was mortally offended and said there was no place for it. Anywhere. Teeth-gnashingly annoying.

  2. Does no one see the irony that this is a phallic symbol to begin with, and that nobody takes offence at that……until someone covers it? O.o

    I think there should be more statues of vaginas in the city. Just sayin’ :p
