Girls, girls, girls

Girls, girls, girls

Options is a word Sydney dykes are familiar with -“ as in, we often feel like we have the option of going to the Bank Hotel on Wednesday night, or the option of not going to the Bank Hotel on Wednesday night. Luckily, a swag of different weekly and monthly girls’ events are finding both form and willing audiences.

Don’t get me wrong. The Bank, with its famous Wednesday night pool competition, is always a worthy option. As is Bumpher Bar at Oxford Street’s Burdekin Hotel, which was going off as usual on Friday night. And Better Homes and Beer Gardens at the Lord Roberts Hotel has made Sundays arguably the best night of the week. But we are a diverse community, and there is always room for newcomers.

Drag performer extraordinaire Sexy Galexy has been hosting what sounds like a drunken orgy of drag decadence at the Sly Fox Hotel, 199 Enmore Rd, Enmore, on Wednesday nights since December. Galexy says the night is full of shows, half-price cocktails and Sveta-rific sounds. A drag king contest is kicking off from Wednesday 9 April with a $1,000 first prize, and the one rule, Galexy says, is the entrants have to be drag kings: Whether they’re a boy or a girl. Half-price cocktails finish at 9pm, shows start at 10pm, DJ Sveta plays from 11pm to 2am and last week organisers were sweeping stayers out at 3:30am. All this, and it’s free too.

Galexy is also performing in the basement of the Imperial Hotel on Erskineville Rd, Erskineville, at Thursday night’s Lick. Lick started a couple of weeks ago under the watchful eyes of resident DJ Sister P and host Renee. They are planning a DJ mix-off for the coming weeks, to give up-and-coming DJs a chance to show their form behind the decks. Lick has a $3 cover charge.

The organisers of Schmutzig, the monthly club night at Phoenix in Oxford St, decided they wanted a night for girls (and boys) looking to get dressed up and messed up while listening to some dark, dirty and wicked beats. Resident DJ Sveta picks out her darkest and dirtiest eclectic bass smut for Schmutzig, along with fellow resident Feisty and special guests. Schmutzig is on this Friday night at the Exchange Hotel in Oxford St and costs $5 before midnight and $10 after. This will be the fourth Schmutzig (the German word for filthy) and from all reports the parties have lived up to their name each time.

Anyone who was lucky enough to be at the Luxe party on New Year’s Eve will know what a nice venue Camperdown’s Alfred Hotel is. Friday night at the Alfred is Girls Night, a weekly event that has grown by word of mouth since its opening. Girls Night is great because of its lack of attitude, organisers say. That, and the pub-priced drinks, great courtyard, $250 pool competition, resident DJs Irene and Renae and friendly staff. The Alfred Hotel is at 51 Missenden Rd, Camperdown, and Girls Night has a $5 cover charge after 9pm.

This Saturday the Alfred Hotel will pay tribute to the birth and adolescence of dance music at the first Back 2 Love night. Organisers are promising Back 2 Love will be all about the music, and I think they mean it. Garry Tee, Chip and Renae will play a mix of funk, disco, house from all decades, electro, 80s, 90s and current music that gives a nod to clubbing history. A limited number of memberships will be available on the night. Back 2 Love will be held on the last Saturday of every month from 9pm, and has a $10 cover.

Resident DJ Kelly Lynch has resurrected old favourite the Lansdowne Hotel (most of us can still remember Spicy Fridays) but on a different night, on a different floor and with a different vibe. The Red Room is in a great space and could be the Saturday night dyke Sydney has been missing for years. It’s on every week at the Lansdowne on the corner of City Rd and Broadway, Chippendale, from 8pm to 3am, and has a $5 cover charge after 9pm.
