Lobby gets new male co-convenor

The NSW Gay & Lesbian Rights Lobby (GLRL) has elected a new male co-convenor.

Filling the position, which has been vacant for over a year is 29-year old Rathana Chea. He joins Kellie McDonald as the group’s leaders.

Chea told Sydney Star Observer his professional background provided the right skill set.

“I’ve worked in the civil sector for the last 10 years in both Australia and the UK,” he said.

“I’ve worked for government and community organisations. I’ve also been on the board of a number of different NGOs in the multicultural sector and the mainstream sector as well.

“I’m the Amnesty International activism co-ordinator for Australia. With Amnesty my role is primarily about building the organisation and the human rights movement through the involvement of activists – that ranges from your letter writing grandma in Wodonga through to your more action orientated young person at university.”

Chea said he had a long involvement with the GLBTI community when it came to activism.

“I was involved in the age of consent campaign and I’m still involved in the marriage campaign,” he said. “I was National Queer Officer for the National Union of Students when I was at uni.”
