The Roman Catholic archbishop of Sydney, George Pell, has been appointed to the Vatican’s Pontifical Council for the Family. The Council, which includes members of the clergy as well as lay people, is charged with developing Catholic Church policy on human life and the family. This broad area covers a range of issues, including homosexuality, genetic research and abortion.
