Tas Liberal for same-sex marriage
A Tasmanian Liberal candidate has spoken out in favour of same-sex marriage at a Tasmanian Gay and Lesbian Rights Group forum in Hobart this week.
Tasmanian Liberal Party candidate for the seat of Denison, Cameron Simpkins, told the forum he would “take up the sword” for same-sex marriage if elected.
Simpkins — a former Australian Defence Force Major — said if elected he would push the Liberal Party for a conscience vote on the issue.
“I believe in personal freedom — people should be able to live their lives without the government telling us what to do or in this case who to love,” Simpkins said.
“I will take up the sword for full legal equality for all Australians whether they are heterosexual or homosexual.”
Simpkins’ support follows ‘in principle’ support for same-sex marriage given by Liberal candidate for Melbourne Ports, Kevin Ekendahl.
