If you love the hit television show Thank God You’re Here or anything in the form of theatre sports, you’re going to love the Opera House’s latest show, Spontaneous Broadway.

Since its inception in 2001 at the Melbourne Fringe Festival, the production has developed into an entertaining showcase of Australia’s in-demand and highly talented actors.

Now it’s Sydney’s turn to share the fun as it opens Wednesday 24 June with a killer cast of impro all-stars including Julia Zemiro, Genevieve Morris, Ross Daniels and special guest Julia Morris.

The show was invented by Kat Koppett for New York Threatresports and involves original song titles written by audience members.

With this show there’s a high level of difficulty as we get the audience to write fictitious song titles on bit of paper. We have had some beauties like IKEA is the gutter that drains my happiness, Julia Zemiro told Sydney Star Observer.

We get amazing titles and the challenge is that we have to sing a song using that title. We also need to invent a musical that it could be from. We all do that a few times each and then the audience gets to choose which full musical they would like to see.

Spontaneous Broadway is hosted by Russel Fletcher with John Thorn as musical director. Playing for 10 shows only, its format will ensure Sydneysiders have a new musical every night.

We get people coming back just to check it’s improvised. Every night there’s a different show, Zemiro said.

We always say if you love musical theatre you would love the show but if you hate musical theatre you might even love it a bit more.

info: Spontaneous Broadway runs from Wednesday 24 June until Saturday 4 July. Tickets start at $29. Bookings on 9250 7777 or at sydneyoperahouse.com.
