Sylvana’s swinging back into town

Sylvana’s swinging back into town

Shine up your dancing shoes because singer extraordinaire Sylvana has announced a return to local venues. The singer, who is adored by young and old alike, will be unleashing her soaring voice at the Clarence Hotel every Friday night.

The newly open venue is fast becoming an inner west GLBT hub with Manacle downstairs and the popular Outbar up top.

If she’s not touring the cabaret circuit or a headline act, Sylvana prides herself on her gay community showcases.

She has been working for the gay industry for many years. Starting at Patches in the mid 80s, she has performed at all the major gay venues in Sydney: Arq, the Flinders, the Shift, Stonewall Hotel, Oxford Hotel, etc.

The performer’s cabaret show was a hit at the Albury for 10 years -” the longest-standing live gig on Oxford St -” and she expects The Clarence might just do the same.

Up until now Oxford St has seemed to be in decline in terms of supporting live entertainment, Sylvana said.

It seems to me that a lot of people living in the inner west, as well as the city, are coming to this venue because it’s closer and The Clarence is providing all of the entertainment.

Each Friday night from 10pm, Sylvana will take to the Outbar stage with her vocal cords ready to sing a handful of past and current hits, from the likes of Edith Piaf, Dusty Springfield, Tina Turner, Bette Midler and Judy Garland.

Every week is a different show, so don’t expect the same routine. I will walk into the place and feel what the audience needs and pull out the show-stoppers accordingly, she said.

What’s great about this venue is that the audience has the freedom of movement to venture down into Manacle and then can pop up into Outbar in time to see my show.

info: Sylvana will perform her three sets every hour from 10pm. For more details on the venue head to www.clarencehotel.com.au.
