Trans youth group starts

A new support service for young trans and gender-questioning people is to open in Sydney’s Inner West. Transtopia, a monthly meeting group for trans youth between 14 and 19, will open at Petersham’s Gender Centre on February 20.

The program will serve as a meeting place where young gender-queer people can meet others with similar experiences and receive advice from older transgender mentors.

Gender Centre outreach officer Michelle Wood said the program will provide a space for the increasing numbers of young transgender people and their families looking for support and information.

“Adolescence is a crucial time in any young person’s life when they are establishing their identity. Transtopia will specifically provide young trans people with the opportunity to learn, have fun and socially interact with other teens facing similar issues,” she said.

The Gender Centre, which was founded in 1983, offers counselling, residential programs and case management services for transgender and gender-queer people
