Anti-gay law to go national?
A national gay ‘propaganda’ law will go to a vote in Russia’s Parliament this month and could see controversial legislation, which passed in St. Petersburg and three other Russian cities, spread across the country.
The Associated Press reports that the law is being pushed by the Kremlin and the Russian Orthodox Church.
It would make it illegal to provide minors with information that is defined as “propaganda of sodomy, lesbianism, bisexuality and transgenderism”. It would also include a ban on holding public events that promote gay rights.
In August last year, a ban on LGBTI pride parades for the next 100 years was upheld by a city court in Moscow.
Despite being fined by the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) in 2010 for banning pride parades, the district government has moved to continue outlawing any public gathering that could be classified as a gay pride march until May 2112.
