Justin Bieber makes surprise $545,000 donation to HIV research

WHILE at the amfAR Cinema Against AIDS Gala event for the Cannes Film Festival in France, pop singer Justin Bieber surprised organisers by donating $545,000 towards HIV research.

The gala event itself raised $35 million for research funding, thanks to the sales of unique items up for auction, including a trip into space with Leonardo DiCaprio on the Virgin Galactic spacecraft that sold for $1 million.

There was also a gilded in 24-carat gold leaf 10,000-year-old woolly mammoth skeleton in a steel display case (pictured below) by British artist Damian Hirst that went for $15 million.

The star-studded event also included performances by Robin Thicke, Lana Del Rey and Andrea Bocelli. Kylie Minogue has also been reported as one of the quests.
