Discrimination bill cops flack

The federal government’s proposed anti-discrimination legislation has come under fire for enshrining the right of religious organisations to practise discriminatory hiring procedures.

Writing in the Sydney Morning Herald, prominent social commentator David Marr (pictured right) highlighted the fact that Prime Minister Julia Gillard, who lives with her de facto partner Tim Mathieson, could be fired by a Christian body under the legislation.

The Senate Committee inquiry into the Bill has received over 3000 submissions with LGBTI advocacy organisations and the Uniting Church of Australia criticising the Bill’s protection of religious exemptions.

The bill has also faced criticism from civil libertarians who argue the government is attempting to censor free speech in section 18C of the bill, which would impose sanctions for statements that offend, humiliate or insult.
