Gay Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten has announced he and his partner, Olympic field hockey player Nicolás Keenan, are expecting their first child, with the help of an egg donor and surrogate mother.

In a joint Instagram post on Monday, the pair announced the news in Dutch, Spanish, and English.

“Someone very special is on the way,” wrote Keenan. “See you in 2027, little one”.

The caption concluded with a special thank you to the couple’s egg donor and surrogate mother, who Jetten’s D66 party states were pre-existing friends of the couple.

“There are no words big enough to thank our egg donor, our surrogate mum Lisa and both their families. None of this would be possible without you”.

The final slide of the post features a quote in Dutch from the couple’s surrogate mother Lisa, who spoke on the privilege of being able to assist the couple on their journey into fatherhood.

“My family and I are absolutely delighted that we can help make Rob and Nico’s dream come true,” Lisa’s quote reads.

A Year Of Massive Rainbow Milestone’s For The Jetten Family

The couple’s announcement comes less than a year after Jetten was sworn in as both the Netherlands’ youngest and first openly gay prime minister.

Jetten is known for his progressive stance on climate action, equality, and social liberalism, and has also been transparent about (and proud of) his sexuality throughout his career in politics, speaking openly about what it was like growing up gay in a small town, and the importance of visibility.

Meanwhile, Jetten’s partner since 2022, Nicolás Keenan, is an Argentine field hockey player. In 2021, he was chosen to represent Argentina at the 2020 Summer Olympics before making his World Cup debut at the 2023 Men’s FIH Hockey World Cup.

Keenan later competed in the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, and most recently in the 2026 FIH Hockey World Cup in Belgium and the Netherlands, where a video of him and Jetten kissing went viral.
