GH bid to extend trading hours

St Kilda nightspot the GH — formerly known as the Greyhound Hotel — has applied to Victoria’s liquor licencing authority to extend its trading hours and increase its capacity.

The move comes as popular southside gay club The Market and gay pub the Xchange Hotel closed their doors in the last two months.

GH manager Damian Price told the Star Observer the closure of the venues has resulted in an increase of patrons at the GH.

“We can already see the increased demand,” Price said.

“There’s a queue to the kebab shop down the road on Saturday night. By law we’re restricted with the number of people we can have in the venue, so it’s kind of heartbreaking when you have venues closing down and you have this amazing space and you physically can’t allow any more people in.”

Price said the newly-renovated venue has applied to increase its capacity to more than 900 and extend its trading hours from 1am on Fridays and Saturdays to 3am, and from 11pm on Sundays to 1am.

He said he was likely to start a petition at the GH for patrons to support the venue’s application.
