GLORIAs nominations open

Nominations for the third annual Gay & Lesbian Outrageous, Ridiculous and Ignorant comment Awards (GLORIAs) are now open.

The GLORIAs, to be held on May 17, the International Day Against Homophobia (IDAHO), are modelled on former NSW MLC Meredith Burgmann’s annual Ernie Awards for sexist comments.

“Every day there are public comments about people in the LGBTI community that are ignorant, unhelpful and sometimes downright dangerous,” NSW Labor MLC Penny Sharpe said.

“The GLORIAs shine a light on these comments and provide an opportunity to expose homophobia and transphobia in our community and have some fun at the same time. Unfortunately there is no shortage of material.”

People have until May 4 to nominate comments that have made their blood boil during 2011-2012 in six categories — media, sport, politics and law, religion, silliest comment from within the LGBTI community, and international.

Voting opens on May 7 and closes on May 17, 5pm.

The Golden GLORIA for the worst comment of the year will be decided by a “boo-off” at the gala dinner at NSW Parliament House.
