Laughter heard when rainbow bridge idea raised

FOLLOWING a vote by Brisbane City Council to guarantee funding to the Brisbane Pride Festival, the decision was marred by some councillors who were overheard laughing when an idea to express support of the LGBTI community was raised.

Last month council unanimously voted in favour of guaranteeing funding for the festival over the next three years.

However, when Labor councillor Victoria Newtown suggested that Brisbane’s Story Bridge be lit up in rainbow colours during Brisbane Pride, laughter was heard from the other side of the council chamber.

According to minutes from meeting, Cr Newtown said: “Perhaps, the Story Bridge could be lit in rainbow colours during Brisbane Pride Month as part of a strong public show of support.

The minutes then indicated that some councillors interject at this point, to which Cr Newton replied: “I think it’s important that while we’re – oh that’s great to see. Sorry, I missed that.”

Cr Newtown told the Star Observer she heard laughter from the LNP councilors, but couldn’t conclusively say if it was in response to her proposal.

“I certainly hope there was no laughter from the Liberal councillors in the chamber when I suggested the Story Bridge be light up for Pride Week,” she said.

“Councillors need to take more care when debating these important issues. I wouldn’t want to see any councillor… laugh at an important symbolic suggestion.”

The Story Bridge was recently lit in a rainbow of colours during the the Valley Fiesta event.
