Market to close midyear

Popular gay nightclub The Market is set to shut its doors in late May or early June, owners have confirmed.

The Commercial Rd venue was put up for sale last year when its owner of 11 years, Spiros Condos, said he would call it quits and take a break from the entertainment industry.

Condos told the Star Observer the venue still plans to have plenty of events on offer in the lead-up to its last hurrah.

“We’re going to go out with a bang,” Condos said.

“So we’ll have plenty of events happening over the next few weeks for people to come in and enjoy.”

Condos said although he’s looking forward to a break, after 11 years at the helm, he’ll miss the southside venue.

“It is sad that it’s coming to an end.” he said.

“Eleven years is a long time in pub land … and it feels like I’m leaving a big chunk of me.”
Condos confirmed the venue has been sold to an owner keen to keep the property as a club or pub-like venue.

He said due to contractual reasons he must remain tight-lipped about the new owner’s future plans and whether the venue will remain a gay nightspot.
