Abortion ‘under attack’

Abortion ‘under attack’

Pro-choice organisations campaigning against what they say is a global attack by right-wing forces on abortion rights that’s being felt in Australia.

NSW’s Women’s Abortion Action Campaign, Queensland’s Pro-Choice Action Collective and Victoria’s Radical Women organisation are jointly organising the first ever national rally for abortion rights on May 29 in Sydney.

It comes as a Queensland couple face trial under that state’s 1899 Criminal Code for procuring an abortion. An anti-abortion conference, called The Right to Life, has also announced it will hold its meeting of international anti-abortion groups in Sydney this year.

It is hoped the rally will show solidarity with the Queensland campaign to drop the charges against the Cairns couple and to decriminalise abortion in that state.

info: The pro-choice rally will be held at Martin Place, 11am, Saturday, May 29. Visit www.waac.org.au
