Getting all girly

Getting all girly

Recently I was reading our sister publication LOTL and was excited to see that Queensland’s Girl Fest went off even more than last year.

It’s something that is high on my priority list to attend next year as my schedule just didn’t allow for it this year. Also, most likely because my family originally heralds from the States I usually find myself pining for Palm Springs come March/April.

I have been inexplicably drawn to the Dinah Shore weekend since I can remember. I’d also give my right arm to go on the next Olivia cruise.

All three events seem to have it all. All that sun and all those semi-clad women in one small area -“ what more could you ask for?

It’s fantastic to see that our community has trailblazers such as these event organisers who can keep up with their male counterparts, both gay and straight.

For those of you who haven’t been lucky enough to attend one of these events, allow me to explain, although it would probably be better described as gushing.

Picture this: thousands, not tens, not hundreds but thousands of lesbians, spending most of their time in swim suits or dressed to the nines and relaxing, having an amazing time meeting new friends and new crushes.

Now, throw in the most incredible parties you have ever attended and just for good measure add the best concert you have ever seen and you are starting to get the picture.

Dinah Shore weekend is held this year in April and boasts Belinda Carlisle and also the Go-Go’s. Past attendees include the creator and cast of The L Word, Taylor Dayne and Carmen Electra and the Pussycat Doll dancers.

Olivia Cruises are celebrating their 35th year this year and if I were to name every dyke they have ever had on board I would be here for more than 400 words. But a brief rundown is Melissa Etheridge, Whoopi Goldberg, k.d. Lang, Shawn Colvin and, coming up, they have Paula Cole among others.

But the way I see it, our very own Girl Fest is just as good if not better, with amazing local comedic and musical talent, loads of hot Aussie girls and the Qld sun.

Ah, if only I had the cash to just go from event to event for the rest of my life I think I would die one very happy king.
