Merenia Gillies, who has started making a name for herself in the gay community thanks to appearances at Lickalicious, is heading to the Zeta Bar. The singer will perform at 1pm on Sunday 16 March.

Born of Maori, Gypsy and Welsh blood, Gillies has been described as sultry, smooth and knowing. She writes emotive, reality-based songs that speak to real people. She is renowned for having an instinctive improvisational ability.

Her music was used on the Once Were Warriors film soundtrack and she’s worked on national tours for Love Tattoo and Paul Mac and contributed to writing tracks for their albums.

Merenia sings in several languages -“ Spanish, English, Portuguese, French, Maori and several African dialects. She’s worked extensively in world music genres as her vocal style is fluid between both contemporary and traditional music.

All musical styles she works in she approaches with respect to the traditional owners. Merenia has the talent and ability to move freely between genres.
