It’s an honour just to be nominated …

With just two weeks left I should really start talking about DIVAs, shouldn’t I? But I first must thank the mystery Byron from Potts Point (letters, SSO 725) who thinks the sun really shines out of my bum. For a minute I thought it was Fuchsia who was the author but even after numerous drinks she swore black and blue she didn’t write it. Mind you, she did have her hand down a young man’s pants at the time so is that the same as having your fingers crossed? But whoever did, thank you for your kind words -“ it was much appreciated.

Now to the awards -¦ I want to win! No, no, no, it would be an honour to be nominated. Like shit it would. I say, bring home as many DIVAs as you can. I think secretly every showgirl wants some sort of acknowledgement of her work. Should you just be happy with the constant remarks of I think you are my favourite or Courtney is my favourite but you are second? Having young queens coming over to you and saying, I came out about a year ago and you were the first drag queen I ever saw, you have made me laugh every time I have seen you, thank you, is better than any award for me, but you can’t put that on a mantle piece can you?

But in the same breath I have to yell, Voting is almost upon us, get ready! As per every year, the general public has the chance to vote on who they think really deserves to take home a prize. Voting is on Saturday 21 August from 12 noon till around about 4pm. You are able to vote on numerous awards such as Sydney’s favourite drag queen (Maxi), Sydney’s favourite DJ (Penny), DIVA rising star (Shirley Valentine) and so on.

Each vote really does count so pop up to Ginger’s. Normally there is a great party atmosphere there and it will take only about 15 minutes to change a drag queen’s life. To all the people who come and watch a drag show and leave with a smile on your face, thank you. You are the ultimate reason we all do what we do.

Still on DIVAs, the DIVA committee have asked me to send out the word they are looking for volunteers to help with the lead-up and night. If you volunteer, you will be paid one million dollars. No, you won’t but I have been told that you will be looked after. If interested, drop the committee a line at [email protected].

For all those who want to know, the place I am doing pole dancing classes is Bobbi’s Pole Studio on Castlereagh Street. You can contact Vanessa on 0425 276 951 and tell her that Maxi sent you. Now no one will have to ask me any more, will they?

I hear that the DIVAs have booked a fabulous international star to perform at the after-party at Arq this year. I am not allowed to mention who it is yet but she is amazing.
