Rights talk at sports fest

The 1st Asia Pacific Outgames in Melbourne next year will share the limelight with a human rights conference aimed at the growing queer populations in the region.
Activists, academics and community members are invited to exchange ideas on the issues faced by GLBTI people in the Asia Pacific region such as education, HIV and health, workers’ rights and transgender recognition.
Speakers include SBS newsreader Anton Enus, former New Zealand MP Georgina Beyer and activists from Indonesia and Sri Lanka.
Commissioners Graeme Innes of HREOC and Elizabeth Evatt of the International Committee of Jurists will also talk, having experience with the legal instruments that protect vulnerable groups.
Registrations are open for the Rainbow Conversations conference 30-31 January 2008 at Melbourne Town Hall, via www.melbourneoutgames.org.
