Take one for the team

Team Sydney is looking for volunteers to take up positions on the board and donate some of their time to assisting the ever-growing range of GLBT sports clubs.

Five people are needed, two to take on the specific roles of president and vice-president as well as three other general spots for people who think they could help run the organisation.

Running since 1984 under various names and guises, Team Sydney is the central organisation which assists with the starting and mingling of GLBT sports clubs.

Providing an avenue for GLBT community members with a sporty bent to access a range of sports information, their role is as much about helping the clubs as it is about helping the community find the right social sports club for them through their presence at Fair Day and the annual Sports Day Out.

There are Team Sydney equivalents right round the world though many of those teams tend to arise, phoenix-like, every four years or so for the Gay Games, Team Sydney director Ian Wilby said.

We see ourselves being much more of a permanent fixture that is here to promote sport through Fair Day and Sports Day Out. We try to assist with the formation of new sports bodies, like at the moment we’re trying to get lawn bowls and dragon boat racing up and going.

At the moment we really need some people to step up and volunteer for some positions on the board. We’ve found it hard to get people to step away from their own clubs and give a bit of extra time to help Team Sydney.

The amount of time it would take up varies. Possibly around three to four hours a week and more when there’s a big event coming up like Sports Day.

We’d be really interested in getting some more women on the board, and it would be great to get someone who had some experience with taking minutes. That’d be a real bonus.
