Transgender support group

A transgender support group has been launched at the Women’s and Girls’ Emergency Centre in Surry Hills.
The Centre is a daily drop-in service for women who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.
Case worker Julia Phillips said the transgendered women who attend the centre have experienced discrimination in other agencies.
“We identified with these women the need to create more support and recognition within the service community,” she said.
“The idea behind the current format of the group is to provide a space to create a peer-based community, then identify, discuss and address the issues facing women in the transgender community.
“We are also hoping to provide a space to share ideas on lifestyle and leisure.”
The transgender women’s support group, which is for women who frequent or live in the inner city, has been funded through the City of Sydney Council.
The group will meet fortnightly, the next event being 10 October at 2pm. The Women’s and Girls’ Emergency Centre is at 361 Riley St, Surry Hills. To contact them, call 9360 5388 or email [email protected].
