Tuesday to get fat with fun

Aurora has taken the literal translation of Mardi Gras, “Fat Tuesday”, and run with it for their 2008 fundraising season.

In a tribute to Mardi Gras, Pancake Tuesday, and Carnival, Fat Tuesday will be a food, wine and song extravaganza.

To be held at Slide on Tuesday 5 February, the event will feature entertainers, Burton Premium Wines, and a three-course feast designed by Marc Kuzma (a.k.a. Claire de Lune).

The money raised by Aurora on Fat Tuesday will be disbursed to organisations such as the Gay and Lesbian Counselling Service of New South Wales and Twenty10 Gay and Lesbian Youth Services.

The 2007 grants were also handed out to the Gender Centre, the Anti-Violence Project (AVP) and the Lesbians and Cancer Project.

Aurora chairperson Alex Sosnov said Aurora recognised the “great burden” of HIV/AIDS, but determined that there was already strong support for organisations in this area.

“Aurora was formed nine years ago by a group of friends who saw that a lot of community organisations, particularly non-HIV, were finding it really hard to find enough funding to provide their services,” she said.

“So they decided to create an organisation where people could donate money, and they held a fabulous event every year, which is the Aurora annual dinner.”

Since that time, Sosnov said, Aurora has grown considerably, with the original nine directors now trustees, and additional fundraising events held throughout the year.

Following a record fundraising year in 2007 of more than $80,000, Aurora has started the new season with a program based around the fine-dining concept.

The first event, Fat Tuesday, will be held at 6.30pm on Tuesday 5 February at Slide, 41 Oxford St, Darlinghurst. Tickets are $95, which includes food, drinks and entertainment.
