Seniors service runs out of funds

A vital community service offered by the Queensland Association for Healthy Communities (QAHC) is in desperate need of funding and is hoping a Christmas miracle will see them continue their work beyond next year.

The LGBT Seniors Community Visiting Service is an Australian first community project that offers older members of the LGBTI community in-home visits from trained volunteers in an effort to provide a friendly and regular means of keeping them connected with the community.

The project attempts to deal with social isolation issues that affect many seniors. The trained volunteers also help play an important role providing support and information on other inclusive aged care services.

The Visiting Service has been funded with grants from the J.O. and J.R. Wicking Trust, however this will end in 2013. QAHC is putting the call out for donations over the Christmas holiday period to keep the service running and offering hours of companionship and support for LGBTI seniors in the community.
