U.S. Ad Of Republican Waiting In Women’s Restroom Exposes Far Right’s Obsession With Genitals
A satirical U.S. ad — one in which a male politician is waiting in a girls’ bathroom stall to verify entrants’ sex — is being praised by Them’s Delia Curtis for showcasing the absurdity of the Republican Party’s fixation on trans people and their genitalia.
The 30-second ad by Progress Action Fund (PAF), fittingly dubbed “Republicans In Your Bathroom”, commences with a school-aged girl opening a public bathroom stall, only to scream at the intruder she finds therein.
“What are you doing? Who are you?” the girl frantically asks the grey-haired man in business attire sitting on the toilet seat in front of her. In response, the man identifies himself as her “Republican congressman”.
“Now that we’re in charge,” he continues, “I’m checking to make sure there’s no trans people in the wrong bathroom.”
The girl replies, saying that “bathrooms are private” before asking the Republican an astute question: “Don’t you have anything better to do?”
“I won the last election,” the congressman retorts, “and this is my priority. Now,” he continues, a sickly grin curling his lips, “let’s make sure you’re really a girl.”
A Funny Ad Outlining A Serious Republican Delusion
The ad is intended to mock the Republican Party’s obsessive preoccupation with trans people, who make up an estimated 1.0% the U.S. population, all while anti-science rhetoric, growing wealth inequality, and a soaring cost of living crisis are each unequivocally posing a much realer threat to everyday Americans.
“Americans want their elected officials to lower gas prices and end the war in Iran,” said executive director Joe Jacobson, “not follow them into the f–king restroom.”
“Republicans are creepy as hell. Democrats need to grow a spine and call Republicans out for their creepy fetish of monitoring children’s bathrooms.”
The ad comes just two months after the Trump administration asked the United States Supreme Court to uphold its ban on transgender people serving in the military, and one year after Trump moved to ban gender-affirming care for trans youth.
