Wong welcomes girl

Federal Finance Minister Penny Wong and her partner Sophie Allouache have welcomed a baby girl.

Alexandra was born at Adelaide’s Women and Children’s Hospital on Sunday at 8am.

Conceived using IVF from a donor known to the couple, she weighed in at 3.23 kilograms.

Wong welcomed the new addition, saying she and Allouache were looking forward to spending time at home together and asked for their privacy to be respected.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard congratulated the couple.

”I am thrilled for Penny and Sophie. This is wonderful news, and Alexandra is beautiful and a source of joy,” she said this week.

Alexandra’s birth comes just a week after Wong spoke passionately in favour of marriage equality at the Labor Party National Conference, where the party platform was changed in support of her motion.
Wong and Allouache announced in August they were expecting a child.

“We are extremely grateful to our IVF service and staff, and to our donor, for giving us the opportunity to raise a child together,” she said at the time.

“Like any expecting parents, the prospect of welcoming this child into our lives fills us both with joy.”
