Northern Exposure – Stay connected

Northern Exposure – Stay connected

I hope you’ve recovered from New Year’s celebrations and are ready for a year packed with good times, good health and purpose.

As we get busy it’s important we maintain our connection with our communities. Being social improves health and wellbeing and who knows who you may meet, once you venture out.

On February 12 Frou Frou productions present Delicious, a night of great music and company at the Lismore City Bowling Club. Local identity DJ 1iSAMARUi will take over the reins for a five-hour set that includes house and nu disco. $15 entry.

The following day, Sunday, February 13 from 5.30pm, the first Pride Sunday session for 2011 will be held at the ‘Cocktails and Nite Club’, 8 Keen St, Lismore. It’s beach-themed, so get out your togs.

If you are HIV + and would like to improve your health, Life Enhancement Action Program (LEAP) is on offer through ACON Northern Rivers. The goal of LEAP is to improve long term health, wellbeing and quality of life for participants through improving nutrition and exercise practices. Each week the participants will attend two exercise sessions, supervised by an exercise physiologist/ personal trainer and a one-hour nutritional session facilitated by a nutritionist/ dietician. Each participant has a personal exercise regime developed for them depending on their physical abilities and fitness levels. A three-month gym membership is available for those completing the program. Contact Roy 02 6622 1555 for details.

Finally, I must mention the life-changing floods just north of us. As Northern Rivers is a flood area we have a unique empathy for those affected.

Queensland and Healthy Communities has arranged a flood recovery fund to help GLBT people who need assistance for sensitive items but are not comfortable seeking help from mainstream groups. People can donate to this fund and find other flood recovery information at www.qahc.org.au/floods
