A law allowing intersex people to identify themselves as a third gender on official documents has gone into effect.

Tasmanian Labor will now support the ability for parents to opt out of including gender on their children’s birth certificates, rather than the removal of gender markers entirely.

The future of a bill allowing trans and gender diverse people to easily change the gender on their birth certificate is uncertain, ahead of an expected debate in the upper house next week.
