NSW Police told the inquiry that despite internal efforts, “homophobic or transphobic sentiments have not been eliminated entirely from the force, or from society more generally”.
“If 2018 has taught us anything, it is that we are stronger when we work together.”
The inquiry was announced in September to investigate LGBTI hate crimes which took place between 1970 and 2010.
“The focus of many of these violent attacks was in, and around, Marks Park. This memorial will help acknowledge and heal the trauma these events have caused for the families of the victims as well as the LGBTI community”
“This inquiry is overdue. For the heartbroken friends and family members of these individuals, who were targeted and murdered, it has been a decades long journey for justice and redress.”
Of the 88 cases between 1976 and 2000 reviewed in a recent report, 63 were declared solved, 23 remain unsolved, and two were not reviewed.
While almost 95 per cent of young gay people surveyed had been victims of hate crimes, only 10 per cent of the crimes had been reported.
