Trailblazing showgirl set for Hall of Fame

The Hall of Fame recipient for this year’s DIVAs has been announced as the incomparable Christy McNicol.

Born and raised in Sydney, like many transsexuals, Christy knew she was different from a very young age. Having worked for two years in Sydney’s Les Girls Kings Cross stage show, McNicol was asked to go on an Australian casino tour with the prestigious Simone and Monique’s Playgirl Revue, which then took her to Amsterdam, Athens, Barcelona, Dublin, London, Paris, Rome and Scotland.

With the birth of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, director Stephan Elliott asked McNicol to produce a show to entertain guests at the Australian premiere of the movie. She brought together some of Australia’s finest transsexuals to create The

Original Priscilla Show. The show was an overnight success, and embarked on a national club and casino tour and in 1997 was nominated for an Mo Award.

These days McNicol travels with her one-woman show Gypsy, a mix of glamour, songs and comedy.

“Christy epitomises glamour from the golden era of drag. She is a pioneer who led the way for many of the showgirls who seek a career beyond the scene today. We simply cannot wait to induct such a worthy performer to the DIVA Hall of Fame,” DIVA chair Greg Steele said.

The 21st annual DIVAs are to take place at the Byron Kennedy Hall on Monday, October 24. Final tickets for the awards are available at www.divaawards.com.au and DIVA Voting Day will take place at Stonewall Hotel from noon – 5pm, Saturday October 22.
