Embassy event slammed

Religious conservatives have labelled a gay rights function at the US Embassy in Islamabad “cultural terrorism”.

“Such people are a curse for the society and social garbage,” a statement issued by the Jamaat-e-Islami party said.

“The participants don’t deserve to be Muslims or Pakistani and the support and protection announced by the US administration for them is the worst social and cultural terrorism against Pakistan.”

The party said only US drone and missile strikes inside Pakistan constituted greater assaults.

Assembly of Islamic Clergy leader Maulana Gohar Shah called the event “an attack on the entire Muslim world and its Islamic culture”.

Around 75 people attended the June 26 reception.

“This gathering demonstrated continued US Embassy support for human rights, including LGBT rights, in Pakistan at a time when those rights are increasingly under attack from extremist elements throughout Pakistani society,” a statement on the US Embassy’s website said.

  1. I see. So suggesting tolerance and respect is “cultural terrorism” and “extremism” but foaming at the mouth and calling peaceful people calling human rights “social garbage” and comparing GLBT people’s mere existence to missile strikes, and a curse…. perfectly rational Islamic culture. Of course. Islamic apologists: you have some explaining to do.

  2. So much mud is thrown at the USA…but here is a great example of so much that is positive about America!
