Lou Sanz: Not Suitable For Children
TAP Gallery, June 16
It takes a brave performer to stand up in front of a small, relatively sedate crowd on a rainy night and reveal their darkest, most humiliating sexual exploits.
Ten points, then, to Melbourne comedian and writer Lou Sanz, who did just that in her stand-up show Not Suitable For Children at the TAP Gallery last night, with hilarious results.
Sanz’s show is a collection of ‘children-themed’ stories drawing heavily from (presumably) true incidents in her own life. Gay or straight, you should find much to laugh at in her tales of awful ex-boyfriends and deeply, deeply terrible sexual encounters.
From the ex who used her grandmother’s treasured teddy bear as a sex toy, to the lithe ballet dancer who preferred to fellate himself rather than letting her give it a go, her luck with men is enough to turn a girl gay — if so many of her ex-boyfriends hadn’t already beaten her to it (sometimes with each other).
Some early nerves from Sanz (and the momentary threat that she’d be upstaged by the owner’s cat) were swiftly dealt with, as Sanz settled into the show and she and audience alike revelled in the gross-out nature of her humour.
Not Suitable For Children is certainly not for everyone — a couple of straight men in our audience sat stony-faced as she picked apart the collective sexual fuck-ups of their ilk — but if you have a soft spot for foul-mouthed female comics who aren’t afraid of a few four-letter words, you’ll find much to love here.
Sanz, an award winner in her Melbourne, performs at the TAP Gallery 8pm tonight and Saturday night, with tickets $20 on the door. Don’t miss her.
