Further confusion over Katter stance

Independent Queensland MP Bob Katter has continued to seemingly contradict his already indecipherable stance over marriage equality and his support for a pro-equality candidate last week.

During an interview with Fairfax Media today, Katter again became flustered, agitated and threatened to leave when the topic of marriage equality and his endorsement for ACT senatorial candidate, Stephen Bailey, was raised. Katter said that there was “no way, Jose” that the issue would be discussed at a Katter Australia Party (KAP) national executive meeting this Friday.

Katter appeared to be returning to his vehemently hard-lined stance over marriage equality despite declaring his support for Bailey on Canberra radio last week and stating that he welcomed diverse views within the KAP from all sorts of candidates.

“I always find talking to young people very exciting and Steven would be a very good example of that kind of person,” he said on 2CC last Friday.

In the interview with Fairfax, Katter rejected any suggestion that this issue, as ex-KAP member Bernard Gaynor stated, would “destroy his party”.

“We are of one mind on the important issues,” he said.

“If you’re preoccupied by [marriage equality] in our party, we throw you out.”

In a heated exchange, Katter appeared to continue to go back on the more open stance that he purported on 2CC.

”We don’t think about it. We don’t discuss it. You’re preoccupied with it. You have a problem with it. We don’t. It’s not on our agenda,” he said.

In an embarrassing development on the same day that Katter publically endorsed Bailey, it was revealed that KAP president Aiden McLindon had phoned the candidate and instructed him to resign due to his position on marriage equality.
